Blogging’s A Low-Cost, High Return Marketing Tool

blogging.jpgThere seems to be this theory in the business world that everyone should blog.

But, as anyone who has ever read business blogs can tell you, the quality of information and entertainment varies wildly from person to person.

This NY Times article highlights both sides of that quality spectrum, and the piece does make the good point that in the right hands, a blog can be a great marketing tool.

For companies in the technology sector, having a blog is pretty much expected. Still, Tony Stubblebine, the founder and chief executive of CrowdVine, a company that builds social networks for conferences, said that one of his main reasons for blogging is to show that his business model is different from the typical technology start-up.

“Everyone in Silicon Valley is focused on venture capital funding and having an exit strategy,” he said. “Because I’m not focused on raising money, I can focus on my customers, since they aren’t a stepping stone to some acquisition or I.P.O.” He added: “I’m trying to create a community of help for small Internet businesses like mine. My blogging philosophy is like the open source model in software. It’s sort of a hippie concept. If I can help other people, it’s personally rewarding. And those people will likely pay it back in some ways.”Reading the article opens up the obvious question. So why is Internet Broadcasting blogging about the state of local news?

I’ll leave that answer to people higher up the foodchain than myself. But I can tell you why I’m blogging here.

I have a wide range of work experiences, and I’ve done everything from covering local school boards to writing about Wall Street. I’ve worked in a local TV newsroom, done local and national talk radio and worked at several online news startups.

The state of local news is something that I’m personally interested in, and I feel I have some small amount of experience to pass along in this blog. But I also love hearing from other people trying to solve some of the same problems I deal with everyday.

I think this blog makes a lot of sense for Internet Broadcasting, but honestly, it makes a lot of sense for me personally, as well.

I suspect that many of you blog for both personal and business reasons. So tell me in the comments…why do you blog? Do you think it helps your business?
